Training for Quality (TZ)

Description 

A training programme for journalists, which combined short training courses with an intensive mentor programme, peer review sessions and e-learning via an online platform.

The training focused on basic skills and newswriting and online and investigative journalism. The trainings program targetted correspondents, with a special focus on correspondents from up-country. Short training courses were complemented with a 4 month mentoring programme consisting of personal coaching, review meetings with mentors, personal assignments and press conferences and a 2-week internship.

For the organisaiton of the mentor programme MFA partnered with the International center for journalist, Joachim Buwembo supervised the mentor programme. The programme was supported by an e-learning platform, which allowed for easy upload of training materials, peer-to-peer learning while at the same time it provided a tool to keep track of the progress the students were making

E-learning platform

For the Training for Quality programme an e-learning platform was developed. The platform provided training materials, allowed peer-to-peer review of articles, and mentoring. All articles written during the training were published on the platform.

Results

  • 21 people graduated for the training course
  • a webiste was developed for online review
  • Internships for 14 participants
  • Participants articles made headlines in newspapers
